At the present time, Maija is working in a new technique - painting. After several years of discovering the possibilities that both papier mache and coloured pencil technique offer, she is now exploring and enjoying the medium of painting.

Her theme is beach stones. This has been a predominant theme for many years in her artwork. The area of Georgian Bay, where she resides, has beaches of stones of varying sizes, shapes and colours - a veritable goldmine for this artist.

The geological history of this area stretches back millions of years to the Silurian Period, between 438 and 408 million years ago. At this time, the area of the Bruce Peninsula, situated just northwest of the artist’s studio was located 10 degrees south of the equator. Many fossils of various corals from that era are found here today.

Maija's art studies began in Montreal, Quebec at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, School of Art & Design (Visual Arts Diploma) and then at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (BFA/Art Education), where she worked primarily in printmaking and drawing. Upon her return to Ontario, she took further courses at the Ontario College of Art in Surface Design and Medical Illustration. She then completed her Art Specialist in Education at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Maija's artworks are found in private collections in Canada and the United States and she has participated in exhibitions in Ontario and Quebec.
